Painful Sex

What it feels like

Painful penetration, pain and discomfort during sex, difficulty achieving orgasms

Why it happens

As estrogen declines during menopause, vaginal tissues thin and become less elastic. Reduced blood flow also causes a decrease in arousal and lubrication. These changes can lead to less enjoyable sex, orgasms that are harder to achieve, and painful penetration.

Up to 75%

of women experience painful sex at some point in their lifetime*

‍

Between 17% and 45%

of postmenopausal women say they find sex painful at some point in time†
